Deli Supervisor

We are a gourmet health food stores located in downtown New Haven is looking for an experienced, reliable and hard-working Deli Supervisor to help over-seeing the Deli department with daily operation, product inventory and ordering, train and maintain sanitation standards with excellent customer service skills . This person must be passionate in food, a team-oriented leader who will be working side-by- side with the rest of the deli staff and able to take charge when the Executive Chef is not around.


The Deli Supervisor supports the Food Service Manager in the management of the deli department. The Deli Supervisor ensures excellent customer service and provides support in the areas of scheduling, product management, employee supervision, and safety. The Deli Supervisor reports to the Food Service Manager.

Work Environment:

This position works in both an office and a kitchen environment. Interaction with staff and customers on the operations floor will be a daily occurrence. This may include hot or cold temperatures, warehouse environments, and exposure to open food, raw meats, and sharp cooking tools.



  • At least 3 years work experience in the food service industry.
  • An interest in natural foods and knowledge of natural foods and special diets.
  • Experience creating recipes in a professional cooking environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • An ability to read, interpret, and understand financial statements.
  • Experience executing goals, effectively creating change, and increasing efficiency.
  • The ability to exercise considerable discretion and judgment consistent with the essential functions of the job.
  • A strong work history demonstrating the principles and practices of management and supervision.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds safely.



Customer Service

  • Role model excellent customer service for staff and provide excellent internal service to staff and peers.
  • Ensure that department employees provide excellent customer service and receive appropriate customer service training.

Personnel Management

  • Actively address performance and personnel issues in a timely manner.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies.
  • Assist in the completion of proper and timely staff evaluations.
  • Properly document personnel matters.


  • Ensure compliance with safety practices and procedures, both throughout the store and within the department.
  • Develop a culture of safety among employees.
  • Ensure appropriate safety training for all department staff.


  • Identify locations where increased training is necessary and act to improve development in that area.
  • Make training recommendations to HR as necessary.
  • Ensure that all staff is thoroughly trained for the position they are filling.


  • Maintain working knowledge of personnel reports, margin reports, weekly sales numbers and financial goals.
  • Communicate relevant sales, margin and labor goals to staff on a regular basis.
  • Communicate standards, expectations, policy changes and product knowledge to staff.

Product Management

  • Coordinate sale specials, demos, and utilize available advertising.
  • Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources of supply.
  • Receive orders, or ensure proper receiving by other staff in accordance with established procedures. Keep accurate receiving records.
  • Coordinate returns and credit from suppliers where applicable. Keep accurate accounting of credit requests.
  • Review invoices for accuracy.


  • Plan attractive displays.
  • Develop menus reflective of food seasonality and customer preference.
  • Support the Food Service Manager as needed.
