What is a Keto diet?

A keto or ketogenic diet is based on the principle that eating a diet extremely low in carbs, high in fats and moderate in protein forces your metabolism into a state of ketosis, where the body burns fat for energy. Though it shares some similarities with the paleo diet, the keto diet is more about balancing the macronutrients of carbs, fat, and protein.

Why eat a Keto diet?

Aside from offering efficient weight-loss, a keto diet can help reduce blood sugar levels.

Foods to eat on the Keto diet

  • Meat: beef, pork, chicken, turkey, sausage and bacon
  • Fatty fish: such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, bluefish
  • Eggs, Cream, butter, full-fat unsweetened yogurt
  • Cheese: full-fat hard and soft cheeses, full-fat cottage cheese
  • Low-Carb Vegetables: Especially avocados, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, peppers
  • Nuts and seeds (including nut butters)
  • Fats: coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, and animal fats
  • Unsweetened or extra-bittersweet (90% cacao) chocolate, cacao nibs, and cocoa powder

Foods to avoid on the Keto diet

  • Grains and starches: rice, pasta, bread, cereal, etc.
  • Fruit and Fruit Juices (lemons, limes, and small amounts of berries are OK)
  • Milk, especially low-fat and fat-free milk
  • Sugars: granulated sugar, honey, maple syrup and foods with added sugars (sweets, soda, etc.)
  • Legumes: beans, lentils, peas, etc., (peanuts are OK)
  • High-carb vegetables: potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, carrots, parsnips
  • Low-fat and sugar-free diet foods: these foods are usually high in carbs and/or sugar alcohols (a sugar substitute)
