Celebrating Latinx Brands During Hispanic Heritage Month

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

From September 15 – October 15, we’re highlighting the wonderful Latinx-owned brands we carry at Elm City Market. From grain-free and dairy-free tortillas to heritage salsas and sauces to cookware to sodas and zero-sugar beverages, here are some of the Hispanic brands you’ll find on our shelves:

Brazi Bites

When Brazilian-born Junea Rocha moved to the US, she desperately missed her family’s Pão de Queijo, a fluffy little bun-like cheese bread made with a cheese only found in Brazil. She asked her mother for the recipe and began experimenting with dozens of different cheeses, finally landing on the perfect batch. She and her husband Cameron decided to sample their take on this Brazilian snack at a food show under the business name Brazi Bites, and they sold out! In 2015, they appeared on Shark Tank, putting frozen Brazi Bites in grocery store freezer aisles across the country. Today, the gluten-free Brazi Bites lineup includes a variety of cheese bread flavors, waffles, pizza bites, and mini empanadas. Shop a selection of their products in-store, and learn more about the Brazi Bites Latino Entrepreneur Accelerator Program (LEAP) – accepting applications through Oct 27 – at brazibites.com/leap

Saucy Lips

Natalia Dalton grew up eating her mother Gabriela’s delicious home cooking in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. When their family moved to the US, they brought with them a passion for cooking, secret recipes, and the flavors of their Mexican heritage. They knew they had to share Gabriela’s delicious sauces with the world, so Saucy Lips was born. What began as a small business at local farmers markets has grown into a nationwide brand. “Our mission is simple: to bring families back to the dinner table with the most amazing food imaginable,” says Natalia. “Whether you’re looking to spice up your weeknight meals or add some authentic Mexican flavor to your next fiesta, we’ve got you covered. So go ahead, get saucy with us!”

Siete Foods

Siete Foods was born when Mexican-American Veronica Garza’s family of seven (siete) rallied around her to help her overcome a series of major health challenges. As part of her recovery, Garza explored how food can heal and began making grain-free tortillas. “I knew we had something really special when my Grandma Campos told me that my tortillas tasted better than the homemade flour tortillas she’d made for decades!” Mission-based Siete Foods is passionate about making and sharing real food, gathering together in authentic community, and advocating for healthier lifestyles among Latino families.

Swoon

The idea for Swoon was born when Cuban-American Cristina Ros Blankfein was having drinks with friend and co-founder Jennifer Ross, who had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age and was forever on the hunt to find delicious, zero-sugar drinks. On a mission to prove “zero-sugar” didn’t have to mean “flavorless,” they leveraged the natural sweetness of monk fruit to bring the flavors they’ve always loved to life as all-natural, low-calorie lemonades and iced teas.

Tia Lupita Foods

Hector Saldivar knows that “food is love.” His mother, known affectionately as Tia Lupita (“Aunt Lupita”) filled the family kitchen with love, laughs, and tasty eats that brought everyone together. When Hector moved to San Francisco, his mother would ship him bottles of her coveted hot sauce so he always had a taste of home with him. Hector shared the sauce with friends who soon came knocking, looking for more. With the blessing of his mother, Hector began to bottle her sauce for all to enjoy.
